    Last month we marked Ohio Local Foods Week, held Aug. 7-13, to celebrate not only the tastes of local foods, but also to share the nutritional, economic, and social benefits of local foods in Ohio. In conjunction with many community partners, OSU Extension, Franklin County held events and educational programs for more than 920 adults and youth – from urban farm tours to cooking classes.

    From scanning sale prices to hustling down aisles of options, grocery shopping can be an overwhelming task. OSU Extension, Franklin County Family and Consumer Sciences educator and nutrition expert Jenny Lobb recently co-presented a webinar designed to help consumers make better, more cost-effective decisions at the grocery store. In the webinar, she explores how to efficiently plan for a trip to the supermarket, make healthier food choices within a budget, and recognize and avoid common marketing techniques that food manufacturers often use to entice consumers.

    For Maketia Haralson, a passionate volunteer with Ohio State University Extension, Franklin County, giving back wasn’t what he initially planned to center his career around. In fact, had you talked to him a decade ago, his outlook would have been much different than it is today.

    A native of Michigan, Maketia grew up watching both his father and his mother helping friends and neighbors in varying times of need. “Caring for people is a big part of who I am,” Maketia said. “Even though I tried to fight it at first… it’s been a journey for me.”

    This fall join educators, afterschool personnel, and others interested in learning more about gardening as a context for learning in our 10-week Project Green Teacher school gardening educational series. From learning the basics of starting a school garden to developing engaging curriculum to managing a productive garden, participants will gain insights and best practices on a variety of topics and have the opportunity to participate in the annual 2016 School Garden Conference.

  8. Fall 2016 Ohio Master Urban Farmer Workshop series

    Registration is now open for the next Ohio Master Urban Farmer Workshop Series, beginning in September. Hosted by OSU Extension, Franklin County and Extension in the City, the series is an intensive educational program consisting of 10 evening workshops and one Sunday field trip designed to help individuals learn how to produce and market a variety of food products in urban settings. While the workshop content will be introductory, individuals who already have some experience growing or marketing food products will benefit from participating.

    Join us this summer for the Columbus Urban Farm Tour Series! A joint project sponsored by OSU Extension, Franklin County and the Columbus Urban Farmers Network, the Columbus Urban Farm Tour Series is designed to provide an inside look at several local urban farms, demonstrating the many benefits of urban farming in central Ohio. The tour series is free and open to the public, and there is no advanced registration required to participate. Farm tours will be held rain or shine, and participants should dress accordingly. 

  10. Leading the way for urban agriculture in Columbus

    OSU Extension, Franklin County is proud to be part of a team of consultants working to develop an Urban Agriculture Strategic Plan for the City of Columbus. Ultimately, the plan will aid city officials in establishing or revising policies, procedures, and zoning ordinances to help encourage accelerated growth of urban agriculture as an economic development strategy for the city.
